Expoziția prezintă o zonă aproape necunoscută a artei lui Gábor Miklóssy, acele mici picturi în ulei, de dimensiunea palmei, pe care artistul le numea exerciții. Cei care l-au cunoscut personal pe pictor (fiul său și discipolii) spun că aceste lucrări, databile în perioada 1960-1970, au fost realizate cu vopseaua rămasă pe paletă după ce termina de pictat.
Termenul „exercițiu” face trimitere și la formația de muzician a pictorului (în perioada 1935-1936, acesta a frecventat și Academia de Muzică, concomitent cu studiile de la Academia de Artă din Budapesta). Ca pictor și violonist, artistul nu considera că exercițiile sunt repetiții, ci, mai degrabă, le vedea ca pe un proces generativ, inspirator.
Ideile și accidentele eliberate de subconștient, tușa liberă, cromatica și desenul puteau constitui punctul de plecare pentru compoziții ulterioare.
Deși considera că „arta face lege și din accident”, nu se raporta la improvizare ca la un scop final, iar exercițiile sale nu trebuie să fie confundate cu scrierea automată a suprarealiștilor. Ele constituie instrumentul descătușării formei și al transformării viziunilor în imagini. Artistul poate ridica la rang de operă terenul fertil și proaspăt al acestora prin intermediul compunerii, pe parcursul procesului ritualic al pictării, care se situează, paradoxal, între conștiință și hipnoză.
Lucrările sunt însoțite de fragmente din textele artistului, precum și de câteva opere „mari”, care pun în lumină diversitatea și amploarea operei și gândirii lui Gábor Miklóssy.

A kiállítás Miklóssy Gábor tevékenységének jóformán ismeretlen területét, a tenyérnagyságú, általa „ujjgyakorlatoknak” nevezett olajfestményeit mutatja be. A hatvanas-hetvenes évekre datálható munkákról azt állítják azok, akik a művészt személyesen ismerték (fia és tanítványai), hogy azokat a festés befejeztével a palettán maradt festék felhasználásával készítette.
Az ujjgyakorlat terminus utal a festő zenei képzettségére is (budapesti művészeti tanulmányainak idején, 1935-36 között párhuzamosan a Zeneakadémián is tanult). Festőként és hegedűsként sem tekintette a gyakorlást ismétlésnek, hanem ihletet adó, generáló folyamatnak.
A tudattalanból felszínre törő ötletek és „véletlenek”, a felszabadult ecsetkezelés, színhasználat és rajz a későbbi kompozíciók kiindulópontját képezhették.
Noha vallotta, hogy „a művészet törvénnyé gyúrja a véletlent is”, improvizálásait nem tekintette végcélnak, így nem is tévesztendők össze a szürrealisták automatikus írásával. A formai felszabadulás és a látomásos képteremtés eszközei az ujjgyakorlatok. Ezeknek friss termőtalaját a művész komponálás által emelheti műalkotássá, az ünnepélyes, tudat és hipnózis között ellentmondásosan elhelyezkedő festés során.
A képeket a művész írásaiból válogatott szemelvények, illetve néhány „nagy” mű kíséri, rávilágítva Miklóssy Gábor gondolkodásának és életművének sokrétűségére. Az írásokban egy cerebrális, következetes művészt és gondolkodót ismerhetünk fel, aki számára a festés mindig maximális odafigyelést, tudatosságot feltételezett.

The show presents an almost unknown side of Gábor Miklóssy’s art, the small, palm-sized oil paintings which he simply called „exercises”. The works dating back to the 1960’s and 1970’s were made – according to those who knew the artist (his son and his disciples) – using the paint which remained on the palette after painting.
The term exercise also refers to the musician background of the painter, who in 1935-1936, parallel to his art studies in Budapest, also visited the Music Academy. As both painter and violonist he considered exercising more than just rehersal, rather, as a generative and inspiring process.
Ideas and chance released by the subconscious, the loose brush-work, the color combinations and drawing could all be starting-points for later compositions.
Even if he stated that „art turns even chance into law” he didn’t consider his improvisations as scope, thus these exercises shouldn’t be confused with the automathic drawing of the Surrealists, even if he had many symbolic-surrealist works. The exercises are instead instruments of formal liberation and of transforming visions into images. The resulting fresh and fertile topsoil can be raised to the level of creation during the ceremonial process of painting, which paradoxally is situated between consciousness and self-hypnosis.
The exercises are accompanied by a selection from the painter’s writings and a few „great” paintings that reveal the diversity and range of Gábor Miklóssy’s thought and oeuvre.
