Născut în 1988, Radu Băieș aparține unei noi generații de artiști din România, pentru care comunismul nu mai reprezintă perioada copilăriei. Poate din această cauză se simte în arta lor o detașare – nu nepăsare – față de problemele concrete ale istoriei.

În pictura lui Băieș raportarea nu se face așadar la semnificația unor momente istorice sau la întâmplările actuale, ci se evocă un moment, care poate fi oriunde și oricând. Este vorba despre un moment încărcat, puternic, care devine o prezență misterioasă pe suprafața pânzei.
Crearea unor imagini evocatoare este o constantă a picturii sale; elementele care apar în ele, indiferent că este vorba despre copaci, bănci, oi sau despre peisaj, devin prezențe și expresii ale unor trăiri. Se naște astfel nu o mitologie, ci un univers propriu, pe care el însuși îl numește Ostrov.

Referindu-se la lucrarea omonimă, afirmă: „Ostrov înseamnă insulă. Lucrarea aceasta este încercarea de a-mi construi o insulă, cu un limbaj propriu, cu niște personaje ale mele. Ca mod de tratare, acesta e Ostrov-ul meu. Ca sugestie, face trimitere la celălalt Ostrov, prin redarea umbrelei de paie. Pictura e, deci, o plimbare în lumea fiecăruia.”

Radu Băieș, ca mulți dintre tinerii pictori clujeni, a pornit de la fascinația pentru pictura figurativă și reperele ei contemporane. Într-o primă fază, preocuparea lui a fost de a descoperi și a încerca repertoriul picturii, elemente din care a început construirea unor configurații în colaje pictate. În acestea exista deja dubla raportare la suprafața picturală: suprafață abstractă pe de o parte, element purtător de conținut, iar pe de altă parte, o raportare care în lucrările din expoziție a devenit pronunțată. Gesturile s-au eliberat de sub rigoarea formei, caracterul inițial al figurii se șterge, Radu urmărind realizarea unui echilibru dintre figurativ și abstract, dintre formă și expresie.

Az 1988-ban született Radu Băieș a romániai művészek egy olyan nemzedékéhez tartozik, amely számára a kommunizmus már nem esik egybe a gyerekkorral. Talán ezzel magyarázható a történelmi kérdésekhez való könnyed, de nem érzéketlen viszonyulásuk.

Băieș festészetében nem bizonyos történelmi momentumokra, nem aktuális eseményekre támaszkodik, hanem olyan pillanatokat örökít meg, melyek bármikor, bárhol megtörténhetnek. Erős, telített momentumokat ragad meg, melyek titokzatos hangulatot árasztanak a vásznon.
Festészetének állandó jellemzője a sokrétű képalkotás: a festmények elemei, akár fák, padok, juhok vagy tájelemek, minden alkalommal valamely átélés, tapasztalat kifejezői. Nem magánmitológiát, hanem egész univerzumot teremt, melyet így nevez: Ostrov. Azonos címet viselő munkájáról szólva kijelenti :
„Ostrov szigetet jelent. Ebben a munkában saját szigetemet próbálom megteremteni, saját nyelvemen, saját szereplőimmel. A munkamódszer szempontjából ez saját Ostrovom. Ugyanakkor a szalmaernyő ábrázolásával a valódi Ostrovra is utalok. A festészet tulajdonképpen mindannyiunk világában tett séta.”

Radu Băieș, mint a fiatal kolozsvári festők sorában oly sokan, a figuratív festészet és annak kortárs módszerei iránt való elkötelezettségből indul ki. Első lépésként a festői eszközöket fedezi fel és próbálja alkalmazni, majd ezeket festett kollázsok elemeiként használja fel. A kollázsban már megjelenik a festett felülethez való kettős viszonyulás: egyrészt absztrakt, másrészt viszont tartalomhordozó felület, és ez a viszonyulás a kiállított munkákra fokozottan jellemző.
A gesztus már nem áll a forma szigorú fennhatósága alatt, az alak eredeti körvonalai elmosódnak, Radu ezáltal a figuratív és absztrakt, a forma és kifejezés egyensúlyát igyekszik megteremteni.

Born in 1988, Radu Băieș belongs to a new generation of Romanian artists, for whom Communism does not equal childhood. This might be the reason for their detached, but not uncaring creative attitude in addressing various historical issues.

In Băieș’ painting, reference is made not to the significance of certain historical moments or events: the moments evoked can occur anywhere and anytime. These are heavily laden moments, gaining mysterious presence on the surface of the canvas.
As a constant feature, his paintings create powerful moments, with elements that, whether they are trees, benches, sheep or landscape, become the expression of certain experiences.  This leads to the birth of an entire universe which the artist himself names Ostrov. Speaking of the similarly entitled work, he states:
„Ostrov means island. This work is my attempt to create my own island, my own language, my own characters. This is my Ostrov, as a method. As a suggestion, it refers to the other Ostrov, by depicting the straw shade. Painting consequently is a stroll taken is the world of others.”

Radu Băieș, as many of the Cluj painters, set out from his fascination with figurative painting and its contemporary forms. At first, he tried to discover and apply figurative pictorial methods, and then used these elements to construct various configurations in painted collages. These already display a double approach to the pictorial surface: the abstract surface on one hand and the content-bearing element on the other, a highly characteristic approach of the exhibited works.
The gestures have escaped the rigor of form, the initial character of the shape is blurred, Radu trying to establish a balance of the figurative and the abstract, of form and expression.
